Helene was born in Oldenburg, Germany, on April 17, 1851. She was married to a Mr. Baehr/Baer/Behr of Oldenburg and they had two children, Bertha (born 1875), and Emma (1880). After emigrating from Germany sometime between the births of the two girls, Helene Baehr is listed as “divorced” with the occupation of “keeping house” with the two girls in New Braunfels, Comal Co., Texas, in the 1880 census.
On Oct. 17, 1881, Helene married widower Wilhelm M. Altenhof in Comal Co., Texas. They had three children together. Wilhelm died in 1915, and by the 1920 census, she was listed as a boarder in the household of Arthur Koerner in Gillespie Co., Texas. When she died on Nov. 8, 1922, she was residing at the Protestant Home for the Aged in San Antonio, Bexar Co., Texas.
