He was born at Moss Neck and received his early education at the close by Rappahannock Academy. He studied medicine at the University of Virginia and earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1856. He commenced the practice of medicine in Caroline in 1857. In 1861 he joined the Confederate Army as Examining Surgeon for Caroline County. By 1862 he was Assistant Surgeon at Keen Hospital in Richmond. In 1863 he was transferred to the Army of Tennessee, and sent to Chattanooga. 1864 saw him attached to the 30th Alabama Regiment at the rank of Captain. He was with them through the bloody battles against Sherman, and the retreat. On October 5th, he was transferred back to the Army of Northern Virginia, with the 38th Georgia. He stayed with them until the surrender, having been promoted to Major. After the War he went home to Caroline. In 1872 he inherited Spring Garden from his mother and lived there until 1879, when he and his family moved to Ridgeway. He practiced medicine from there until 1919. He was one of the best known citizens of Caroline County. His death was the result of a fall from his porch. He was almost 87 years old.
