~OBITUARY OF PEARL OHMAN ANDERSON

1896-1994

Longtime Routt County resident Pearl Ohman ANDERSON died September 27 in the Extended Care Center. She was 98.

Pearl Violet Albertina OHMAN was born July 31, 1896 in Carver, Minnesota. She was one of four children raised in a hard-working family, which moved west due to her mother's poor health. Her father worked as a dynamite man for the railroad, which meant that tent living was a part of Pearl's early years.

After living in Denver for about a year, the family lived briefly in Rollins, Colorado, then Kremmling and finally moved to Oak Creek, where they lived in two tents with board siding. The family later took up residence in Keystone, a rail and coal town just west of Oak Creek. The remnants of this company town can still be seen on the drive from Steamboat Springs to Oak Creek.

In 1907, two wagons brought the OHMAN family to Steamboat, where the children enrolled in school and settled down to family life in the rural community. By 1917, Pearl was working at the Steamboat laundry, and occasionally preparing floral arrangements at a local greenhouse. It was at the greenhouse that she met Joel ANDERSON, her future husband.

Pearl and Joel married in the front yard of the OHMAN home on July 28, 1917. They moved into their home at 146 Hill Street in 1928, where they reared seven children. This would be the ANDERSON home for generations, and is still occupied by Pearl's son, Ronald, and his wife, Betty, as well as Pearl's daughter, Martha ANDERSON-URSICH.

Family life focused on the activities of the children for many years, through school and sports as well as the Euzoa Bible Church only two blocks away. Pearl taught Sunday School, worked in the church nursery and was active in the Women's Union. She was also involved in a quilting club, a crochet club and a group called the Royal Neighbors.

Pearl played the piano and instilled a love of music in the entire family, some of whom went on to be accomplished musicians due to Pearl's encouragement. Family sing-a-longs, accompanied by various instruments played by the family, are a memory of youth for many in the family. Another memory is Pearl's love for cooking, with banana bread being one of her specialties.

On July 28, 1962, Joe ANDERSON passed away, but Pearl continued giving of herself to others. She baby-sat for many local families and worked in several area motels. As long as her health allowed, she worked to support the family as well as remaining active in church.

Pearl lived at the Extended Care Center from 1987 until her death. Up to that time, she was believed to have lived in Routt County longer than all but one other living person.

Pearl was preceded in death by a brother, a sister and four of her children. She leaves her sister, Anita, of Hayden; son Ronald of Steamboat; a daughter, Martha ANDERSON-URSICH of Steamboat; son Lyman of Lafayette, Colorado; seventeen grandchildren, thirty-five great-grandchildren, twenty-three great-great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Memorial Services were held on Saturday, October 01 at the Shearon Funeral Home.
