St. David – Niles R. Ayers, 86, of St. David, died at 4:41 a.m. on Monday, October 10, 2011 at Graham Hospital in Canton.
He was born on January 29, 1925 in Dawson Springs, KY to William and Lee (Whitehead) Ayers. He married Donna L. (Benns) Ayers on November 6, 1948 in Lewistown. She survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Kathy McCreery of Daytona Beach, FL, and Kristy (Bruce) Sappington of St. David; one sister, Virginia Luster of Peoria; two grandchildren, Chad Sappington and Eryn Zahn; and three great-grandchildren, Zachary Sappington, and Kaleb and Lexi Zahn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Edward Ayers; and two sisters, Willadean Ayers and Gladys Collyer.
Niles was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving his country during World War II. He was a coal miner for Consol Mining Co. in both Norris and Pinckneyville, retiring in 1985. He enjoyed working in his yard and gardening.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton, where visitation will be held one hour prior to services. Rev. Bruce Rushing will officiate. Burial will be at White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton.
