Bob Bales is a son of Robert B. and Rosa Shoemaker Bales. He married Sandra White on July 4, 1957 at Urbana. She survives. Also surviving: a daughter, Melinda Jean (b. 10-05-1961)and son, Thaddeus Basel (b. 12-31-1966). At his death two sisters survived: Ruby Wahlfeldt of Sun City, AZ, and Mrs. Gail (Irene) Cox of Fort Madison, Iowa; a stepbrother, Robert Hagan of Sheldon and his mother, Rosa Bales Hagan of Urbana. Bob was employed by the University of Illinois for 35 years in the Coordinated Science Laboratory, where he designed and created instruments for basic research. Bob was a vigorous conservationist and naturalist. He lived his entire life within 50 miles of the Middle Fork River, and devoted more than 20 years saving it for othrs to enjoy. In 1968 he founded the Committee on the Middle Fork (of the Vermilion River); after countless meetings and trips, the Committee's efforts were rewarded with the signing of a state law giving the river protection from development in 1986. It was the first Illinois river to win such protection. The Mayors of Champaign and Urbana proclaimed May 16, 1987 as Bob Bales Appreciation Day as champion of conservationist causes in general, and for preservation of the Middle Fork River in particular.
