Jann was born in Ludwigsdorf, Aurich, Ostfriesland in 1812 to Gerd Berens Hinrichs Buss d. 1843 Ludwigsdorf and Elsche Catharina Janssen Flesner d. 1838 Ludwigsdorf. He married Ikke Gerdes Eilerts/Eilerds 3 February 1840 in Westerende, Aurich, Ostfriesland. Jann was a member of the St Nicholas Lutheran Church. He worked in shipping and farming. Jann and family immigrated to South Prairie in 1848 departing Bremerhaven on the "Elizabeth" 15 March 1848 and arriving in New Orleans 17 May 1848 and then in Quincy, IL 27 May 1848. He died 4 February 1859. Jann and Ikke had 8 children. His sister, Tette Christina Buss Flesner, remained in Germany.
