John Andrew was born at Glenmuchlach, parish of Southead, Argyleshire, Scotland; he was baptized March 20, 1811. His parents were Janet (Reid) and David Andrew. John married Mary Brown, daughter of Elizabeth (Ralston) and Charles Brown. Elizabeth and Charles Brown emigrated to Argyle, Illinois with their daughter. John and Mary were tenant farmers in Scotland; in June 1840, they traveled with 3 of their children from Greenock to New York (a voyage of several weeks of stormy weather). They went to Illinois via the Hudson River and the Great Lakes. They lived with John Greenlee's family initially, but then John Andrew bought part of the John Greenlee's claim and established a home. He founded the village of Argyle, IL. Known children: Elizabeth (m. Robert Ralston); David (m. Elizabeth Brown); Charles (m. Davida McDonald); Janet (m. Charles Kelly); Mary (m. William H. Reid); Hugh (m. Margaret Picken); Margaret (m. Thomas Greenlee); John (m. Barbara McMillan); Thomas (m. Mary Ann Picken); Jane (m. John A. Picken); and Matthew (died young).
