Walter Ackerman, 87, of 1479 Winter Drive, died today, June 25, 1986 at Freeport Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He originated the Quality Oil Co. on S. Galena Ave. Ackerman was educated in rural Ridott Township schools. He was a member of St. John United church of Christ, Stephenson County Sportsmen's Club, Elks Club, Stephenson County Farm Bureau, and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He and his wife celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1984.
Born March 22, 1899, near the Seward area, he was the son of Henry and Mary (Eickman) Ackerman. He married Lula Kappenman on Nov. 27, 1924 in Rockford. Surviving are his widow; and one sister, Florence Morphew of Freeport. He was preceded in death by one sister, Anna Neuberger. Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Walker Mortuary. The Rev. Sharon Stier, associate pastor of St. John United Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. A memorial fund has been established for the church.
