11 Year Old Boy Drowns In Des Plaines River
Child Falls From Bridge When Fishing
Helmuth Albrecht Is First Drowning Victim of Year
Helmuth Albrecht, 11 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Albrecht, Libertyville dairy farmers, was drowned Sunday afternoon in the Des Plaines river when he ell from a pier of the new bridge on Buckley road northeast of Libertyville. The accident occurred about 1 o’clock Sunday afternoon while he and an older brother, Hans, were fishing from the bridge.
Early Sunday afternoon the boy asked permission of his mother to go fishing in the river but because of the swollen condition of the river she was loath to let him go. She finally consented and the two boys proceeded to the new Buckley bridge.
Brother Hears Fall
Hans, who was fishing rom the other side of the bridge, heard a splash and turned to find his brother gone and the fishing pole floating on the surface of the water.
He ran for help and residents of the district joined with Chief Deputy Sheriff Thomas E. Kennedy and Deputies Russell McBride, Geno Palmiere and Joseph in the search for the body, which was not recovered until 3:30 in the afternoon. The body was found close to the cement pier where it had dropped and remained out of the main current, which would have carried it down stream and into the overflow south of the bridge.
Accident Verdict
The body was brought to Libertyville where an inquest was held by Coroner J. L. Taylor and a verdict of accidental drowning returned.
It is though that the boy became dizzy watching the moving waters below the bridge and lost his balance. The water in which he was drowned was over 8 feet in depth.
The boy was a pupil in Central grammar school and his grade was dismissed Wednesday afternoon to attend the funeral services which were held at the home.
