Thomas L. Amos II, Portage, Michigan, formerly of Indianapolis died suddenly Thursday, July 28, 2005, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Tom was born July 29, 1951, in Indianapolis to the late Robert O. and Pauline (Radcliff) Amos. Since Tom loved to read and study history, he pursued a career where he could immerse himself in books, research, history, writing and teaching. Tom, a professor of the libraries and history at Western Michigan University, as well as head of special collections at Waldo Library and authority in medieval history, was in his second term as president of the WMU Faculty Senate. Tom graduated from Howe High School in Indianapolis in 1969. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1973 and Master of Arts in 1975 from Purdue University; a Diplome d'Etudes Approfondies from the University of Paris in 1980; his PhD from Michigan State University in 1983; and his Master of Library Science from Indiana University-Bloomington in 1992. Before joining Western Michigan University, Tom served at Saint John's University, Indiana University and Harvard University. He has written numerous books, monographs, articles, book chapters, reviews and papers throughout his career. Tom was a member of the American Library Association, the Medieval Academy of America, the Association of College and Research Libraries - Rare Books and Manuscripts Section, and has been active over the years in several other professional associations. On August 11, 1973, Tom was united in marriage with the former Barbara J. Durr, who survives. Also surviving are two sisters, Freida (David) Pursell of Nineveh, Indiana and Patti Taylor of Indianapolis; father and mother-in-law, Fred and Marie Durr of Sheridan, Indiana and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center-Carmel, 325 E Carmel Drive, Carmel, where friends may call on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorial contributions for Dr Tom Amos, Library Special Collections, may be directed to the "WMU Foundation", and sent to WMU Foundation, 1903 W Michigan Avenue, Kalamazoo, Michigan 49008. Langeland Family Funeral Homes in Michigan will announce a memorial service at Western Michigan University at a later date.
