Born 30 Jan 1793 in Virginia to unknown parents. He married Mary "Polly" Foster O'Brian in Franklin Co., Ohio 11 Jun 1816. They had 3 known children:
James (1816-1840)
Joseph (1817-?))
Mary May (Husbands-Jacob Batesell and Cicero Malson) (1827-1910).

Based on the information in Joseph's War of 1812 pension records Joseph and his family had moved to Illinois in 1838 from Big Darby, Franklin Co.,Ohio. Polly (Mary) is believed to have died June 1846. Eighteen months after Mary's death he married Amanda "Mandy" O'Bryant the 25 Jan 1848. There were no children from this union.

He was a soldier in the War of 1812 serving for the state of Ohio. He was the namesake of Joseph Griffin (1865-1933), son of Nathan Griffin and also the namesake of Joseph Griffin (1901-1968), son of Alexander M. Griffin.
