Son of Thomas and Winnie Harroll Cox. Bryant Cox, one more of the old citizens of Hutsonville township, has gone to the land whence no traveler returns. He was born in Wayne County, North Carolina, October 21st, 1804, died at his residence near Hutsonville, April 16th 1887, age 82 years, 6 months. Bryant was the fourth of a family of seven children, left at the age of five to be supported by a widowed mother. His youth was spent upon the farm with very poor educational advantages. The total number of his school days being less than one month. By his quick intelligent observation, however , he gained sufficient education to serve him in business.
He married at the early age of twenty and began to farm on his own account. But rents being high and the unprofitable mode of farming in his native state induced him to immigrate to the Northwest, which he did arriving in Crawford County June 1st, 1830, making the whole journey on foot, his wife and children coming in a cart drawn by two horses, only one of which belonged to him. Thirty dollars in cash in his pocket was his only capital. He located and commenced farming on rented land near the old homestead. His first crop of corn bought him 8 1/2 cents per bushel. Mr.Cox was not able to get any land of his own till some three years after he came, when he entered 70 acres. From this time on by industry and economy he kept adding to his possessions until he owned nearly a section of land, which later in life he divided among his children.
Mr. Cox was married first in North Carolina to Martha Bradbury, February 5, 1824. The result of this union was five children, three of whom are now living. His second marriage occurred in Crawford County to Candace Harrison, July 15, 1842. To them were born two sons and a daughter, all are living. His third and last marriage occurred August 14, 1881, to Sarah Miller. Mr. Cox was a member of the Christian Church.
