Benjamin M. McCoy was the son of a former slave, Hannah. He was born in Washington, D.C. as a Free Black Man. During his lifetime, he became a teacher, was a member of the delegation that met with President Lincoln in 1862, was elected to the D.C. City Council around 1871 during Reconstruction, and helped to found Asbury Methodist Church in Washington, D.C.
