WOLCOTT Mr. Anthony "Shadow" Azzara, 88, of 12 Edgemont Lane, formerly of Fanning Street and Rosario Drive in Waterbury, died Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at his residence. He was the husband of Susan M. (Rubino) Azzara.

Tony was born in Kimble, W.Va., on Aug. 20, 1920, son of the late Anthony and Maria (Santaguida) Azzara. He moved to Waterbury from West Virginia as a child in 1926. He graduated from Leavenworth High School where he played football and basketball. He worked at Chase American Brass and then Robert Shaw Lux Time where he retired in 1986. He and his wife moved to Wolcott one year ago. He was an avid sport enthusiast and coached Little League Baseball. He was a former member of Sacred Heart Booster Club and a communicant of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception Church.

Beside his wife of 64 years, he leaves two sons, Anthony "Butch" Azzara and his wife, Patricia, and Richard J. Azzara and his wife, Cheryl, all of Watertown; a daughter, Suzanne LoRusso, with whom he lived; six grandchildren, Steven Azzara and his wife, Meghan, of Southington, Denise Tafuto and her husband, Domonic, of Prospect, Christopher J. Azzara and his wife, Lori, of Pittsburgh, Pa., William "Billy" LoRusso and Jenna LoRusso, both of Wolcott, and Rachel Azzara of Watertown; and two great-grandchildren, Avery Tafuto and Michael Azzara. He was predeceased by two sisters, Joanne Squillace and Anna Alonzo, and three brothers, John, Carmine and Pasquale.

Arrangements: Funeral 10 a.m. Friday from Chase Parkway Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parkway, Waterbury, to Basilica of the Immaculate Church for a Mass at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Watertown. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
