BRIDGEWATER — Mary J. Allen, 94, of Bridgewater, died Friday, Dec. 9, 2011, at home. She was the wife of the late Grover Robert "Bob" Allen.
Mrs. Allen was born in Bridgewater on Nov. 25, 1918, daughter of the late George D. and Mathilda Branson Johnson. She was a graduate of New Milford High School, Class of 1936. She was a member the Bridgewater Grange, a member and servant of St. Mark's Church, Bridgewater, and was associated with Christ Church, Roxbury.
During WWII, she served with the civil defense as an aircraft watchperson. She was instrumental in the procurement of grounds for the Bridgewater recreation facilities and served on many commissions and organizations for the town of Bridgewater. She was the longest term leader of the Litchfield County 4-H Club "The Busy Bees". She was an active member of the Bridgewater Historical Society and a member of Bridgewater Center Cemetery Board of Directors.
In 2000, Mary was awarded "Person of the Century" from the town of Bridgewater. She enjoyed involvement with her husband in the Yankee Pleasure Rally Association. She was a lady of many hats with hands that performed works of love. She spent many hours with friends creating quilts for families.
She is survived by a sister, Christine J. Shook, and a sister-in-law, Christine O. Johnson, both of Bridgewater; many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, and great-great-nieces and -nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011, at 11 a.m. at St. Mark's Church, Bridgewater. Burial will follow in Bridgewater Center Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday, Dec. 12, 2011, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford.
