He was born Aug. 13, 1942, son of the late Daniel W. and Kama (Smith) Ball of Reno, Nev. Dan was raised and completed his school career in North Carolina and moved to Portsmouth in 1957. He retired in 2008, from the National Gypsum Plant, after 48 years of dedicated service.
Dan's favorite hobbies were his passion for scratch and lottery tickets, and a good barbecue on a warm summer night. He was a very kind soul who loved and took great pride in his neighborhood. He was the resident guardian angel who would greet you and always took the time to ask how you were when he saw you. He was a longtime member of the Creek AC.
Dan is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Christina A. (Cyr) Ball; daughter Elizabeth 'Beth' Lafland of Portsmouth; brothers Robert S. Ball and wife Kathryn of Portsmouth, Leo Ball and wife Dorothy of North Carolina; sisters-in-law Lillian Ball of Mechanicville, Va., Jill Ball of Lynn Haven, Fla.; and many sisters and brother in laws as well nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his son Daniel R. Ball in 2007; brothers James and Christopher Ball; and sisters Marie Pedrick and Polly McPherson.
Visiting hours will be held at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, on Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. with memorial services to be held at 7 p.m. Burial will take place later in Center Cemetery in North Hampton.
