Ernest Medeiros Acucena, 85, of South Dartmouth, MA, peacefully passed away on July 5, 2008 at home surrounded by family. He was the husband of Esther (Bento) Acucena with whom he shared 60 years of marriage.
Born in New Bedford, MA, the son of the late Manuel Medeiros Acucena and Maria (Aroujo) Acucena, at an early age his family moved to Fairhaven, MA. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in South Dartmouth.
He was a graduate of Fairhaven High School, class of 1940 and Franklin Institute of Technology in Boston, MA. A veteran of World War II, he joined the U.S. Army serving with the 20th Air Force on the Marina Islands in the Western Pacific Theater.
Shortly after getting married in 1948, he and his wife moved to Schenectady, NY to work for the General Electric Company, Research and Development Center in Niskayuna, NY. After 36 years of service with the General Electric Company and raising his family in Charlton, NY, he retired in 1984 returning to this area establishing residence in South Dartmouth where he lived until his death.
He served on the Advisory Council and as a member of the Board of Directors of Coastline Elderly Service for several years. He also was an active member of the Dartmouth Council of Aging, including serving as a peer counselor. He was a long time member of the Air Force Society and Charter Member of the World War II Memorial Society.
He was a humble man and will always be admired for his loyalty, kindness and unconditional love.
Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter Denise A. Marzilli of Westport, MA; a son, Brian Acucena of South Dartmouth; a granddaughter, Erika Marzilli of Houston, TX; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Mary Duff, Rose Duff and John Acucena.
His Funeral Mass will be held on August 9, 2008 at 11AM in St. Mary's Church, 783 Dartmouth St., South Dartmouth. Burial will be in South Dartmouth Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Nurse and Hospice Care, P.O. Box 751, Fairhaven, MA 02719.
