Ray Achter, 88, West Fargo, ND, formerly Wahpeton, died Friday December 7, 2007 at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Fargo, ND.

Raymond Carl Achter was born November 16, 1919, the son of Phillip and Christina (Hermes) Achter in Wahpeton. Ray grew up in Wahpeton and attended St. John's Catholic grade school and graduated from Wahpeton High School. He worked for National Tea in Wahpeton and entered the US Marines in March of 1942, serving central and southwest Pacific area and participated in the Gilbert Islands and Marshall Islands operations. He was honorably discharged in February 1946 and returned to Wahpeton. He was united in marriage to Hazel Smith in Grand Forks on July 27, 1944. He worked for Northern Propane, spending 23 years at Wadena, MN and five years at Ashland, Wisconsin with the gas company. They moved to Wahpeton in 1972, where Ray managed Kentucky Fried Chicken until 1977 when he retired. They continued to live in Wahpeton until 2006 when they moved to West Fargo to be closer to family.

Ray was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with family at Ottertail Lake in the summer.

Ray is survived by his wife, three sons, seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Clarence, Joseph and infant brother John; four sisters: Sophie and Ella Achter, Lucylle Sturdevant and Leona Rubish.
