Elmer Herman Arthur Flathman, the son of John Flathman and Louise Harms, was born on April 18, 1922 at Davenport. He was one of seven child born to his parents. He died on April 19, 1998 in Hebron at the age of 76.

He was baptized on April 23, 1922 by Rev. Johann Meyer at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Kiowa. He was confirmed on June 21, 1936 by Rev. Otto H. Wittig at St. John's Lutheran Church of Chester. He attended schools at Kiowa, Davenport and Chester.

He served his country in the Army Air Force during World War II. He was united in marriage to Margaret Ann Sell on Aug. 26, 1945 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Chester. To this union there were three children born, Carrie Kay, Larry Gene and Diane Marie. After his military service in 1946 they lived and farmed at Chester and the Deshler/Ruskin area. Elmer retired from farming and worked at the Ruskin elevator until moving to Hebron. He has been a member of Faith Lutheran Church of Hebron for the last 18 years. He was also a member of the Lutheran Laymen League and American Legion Saxton Post #180 of Hebron.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sister, Oscar in 1930, Louie in 1952, John in 1965, Laura Keim in 1996, and a granddaughter, Mary Flathman in 1991.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Hebron; children, Carrie Fett and her husband Mike of Plantation, Fla., Larry Flathman and his wife Monica of Davenport, Iowa, and Diane Molthan and her husband Robert of Hebron; sisters, Lilly Stelljes of Chester, and Frances Liebsack and her husband Allen of Ruth, Nev.; sister-in-law, Alvina Hoops of Byron; ten grandchildren, Melissa, Randy, Chad, Shawn, Tory, Brent, John, Chris, Anne, and Susan; seven great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Services were held on April 23 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Hebron with Rev. James P. Moll officiating. The congregation sang "What A Friend We Have In Jesus," Let Us Ever Walk With Jesus," and "Have No Fear Little Flock." Hilda Vortman was the organist.

Pallbearers were Dean Keim, Wayne Flathman, Randy Russell, Chad Russell, Shawn Molthan and Tory Molthan.

Interment was in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery at Chester, with military services by American Legion Saxton Post #180 and Thayer County VFW Post #5328 of Hebron.

Memorials were established to Faith Lutheran Church (Stained Glass Window Project).

Funeral director was Ken Vogel of Price Funeral Home of Hebron.
