Mr. Jerome Irving Greenberg died Feb. 4, 2009, at Kimball Medical Center. He was 84.
Born in the Bronx, Jerry came to Lakewood in 1959, moving to Lake Ridge in 1997. He served in the U.S. Navy, in the Pacific Theater, during World War II 1943-1945.
In 1963, he and his father, Morris, founded Maegreen Gifts, a store that became an institution in Lakewood. He became an integral part of Lakewood civic life. He founded the first Lakewood Redevelopment Agency 40 years ago.
Involved in Lakewood youth sports, he was president of Lakewood Pop Warner Football League, in charge of all the teams and cheerleaders; was an umpire with the Lakewood Little League; served in the MVA Commission for 20 years and on the township committee for many years; and was mayor of Lakewood four different times from 1988, 1992, and 1996.
Jerry was the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year in 1989; Hispanic Man of the Year in 1990; in 1991, Jerry was honored at a dinner and awarded a sterling silver PBA card; and B'nai B'rith named him Man of the Year in 1992.
