Val H. Houser, Jr., 83, of LaGrange died Sunday, January 14, 2007 at Hospice LaGrange.

Mr. Houser was born November 11, 1923 in Pickerington, OH, son of the late Val H. Houser, Sr. and Susan Pearl Houser. He attended Pickerington High School, where he excelled in all sports, graduating in 1941. Mr. Houser attended First Baptist Church on the Square and was an avid Atlanta Braves, Falcons and Hawks fan. He was a member of the Masons, Elm City Lodge #544. Mr. Houser was preceded in death by a daughter, Janis Pillivant.

Mr. Houser was drafted during War World II and became a qualified Parachutist at Fort Benning, GA. He served on Luzon, Leyete, and Los Negroes Islands in the Philippines Islands. Later, serving with the occupation forces in Japan and Germany. Fifteen months to the day after being drafted, he was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant in the 511th Parachute Regiment of the 11th Airborne Division. He was later commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on a direct appointment, serving during the Korean Conflict in the First Cavalry Division from July 1950 to September 1951. On Thanksgiving Day, 1950, he was awarded the Silver Star Medal in a school yard, in Pong Yang, North Korea. He later served in Germany and Italy. He was a commanding officer of Troup "A", 5th Cavalry (The LaGrange U.S. Army Reserve Unit) from 1961 to 1965. He was discharged as a Major after 28 years of continuous service on active duty or in the U.S. Army Reserve Corps.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Janet G. Houser; son, Jack Houser; daughter, Judy Jones and her husband, Derek; son, Johnny Houser and his wife, Kim; eight grandchildren, Jeff Simmons and his wife, Deena, LeaAnne Warner and her husband Chapin, Tim Houser, Ian Correll, Adam Jones, Amanda Jones, Anna Marie Jones, and Jana Houser; four great grandchildren; sister, Beatrice Tharp; two sisters-in-law, Connie Houser and Evelyn Beals; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at First Baptist Church on the Square with Dr. Paul Baxter officiating. Burial will follow in Hillview East Cemetery.

The family will be at the home of Mrs. Janet Houser and will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.

Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to First Baptist Church on the Square in memory of Mr. Val H. Houser, Jr.

Val H. Houser, Jr., 83, of LaGrange died Sunday, January 14, 2007 at Hospice LaGrange.
