Christian Mutti, 70, a resident of Madison township for nearly 40 years, died at
his home last Wednesday afternoon at 2 oclock after a week's illness with
pneumonia.
He was born in Berne county, Switzerland, April 26, 1855, came to America 43
years ago and settled in Wayne county, Ohio, where he lived 2 years. He then
moved to St. Joseph county, where he spent the remaining years of his life.
On March 13, 1876, he was united in marriage to Henrietta H. Juillerat of
Switzerland, who preceded him in death April 1, 1924.
12 children were born to this union, 5 of who preceded their parents in death, 3
having died in infancy in Switzerland, and Mrs. Elizabeth Kaufman and Charles
Mutti.
He is survived by 8 children, Mrs. Lena Birk of South Bend, Mrs. Celestia Avery
of Mishawaka, Ernest of Naugatuck, Conn., Paul of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Mrs. Laura
Berger and Arnold of Madison township, Berton of Penn township and Charles
Kaufman, an adopted son of Fort Hays, Columbus, Ohio; 17 grandchildren, 7 great
grandchildren, two brothers, Gottlieb and Samuel of Bremen.
On Oct. 9 he underwent an operation for the removal of a cataract from his right
eye which was very successful, he being able to see immediately after the
operation, but in a short time he was stricken with his last illness.
He was a member of the Zion Evangelical church of Madison township.
The funeral was held Saturday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, Rev. Kanzler of the Zion
Evangelical church officiating.
