Asher Miner, 1860-1924, was born into two old pioneer Wilkes-Barre families as the son of Charles Abbott Miner and Eliza Ross Atherton. Asher Miner served as president of the Miner-Hillard Milling Company. The Miner-Hillard Milling Company, located in Miners Mills, was founded in 1795, and was the oldest company in Wilkes-Barre at the time.

He was colonel of the 7th Infantry Regiment of the National Guard of Pennsylvania during the Spanish-American War; commanding officer of the 9th Infantry, N.G.P.; commanding officer of the 3rd Field Artillery during the Mexican Border service and commanding officer of the 109th Field Artillery in France during World War I, where he lost his leg during battle. He was elected to Pennsylvania Legislature and served as chairman of the Luzerne County GOP.

He repeatedly refused draft efforts for mayor, governor and the U.S. Senate. His daughter, Margaret Miner Morton, wrote a biography in 1929 entitled "Asher Miner: Citizen and Solider."
