"Jim" Larkin was born on July
4, 1871, on old North Road, Harwich
Center, now Pleasant Lake Avenue,
being one of a family of nine boys
and three girls. In his infant days
he was the victim of an affliction
which compelled him to carry
through life the cross of a heavy
shoe and iron attachment.
In spite of this he was a fine ball
player, being first baseman on the
Harwich High School team and lat-
er on the town team and oldtimers
still remember him as a fine ball
player.
He graduated from Harwich High
in 1891. Going to the city as all
ambitious boys did in those days, he
had the desire to study law. He was
able to find a place in many lines of
businesses and entered Boston Univ-
ersity Law School from which he
graduated in 1897. He was chosen
from hundreds of applicants by Dean
Archer as his personal secretary. He
Was also assisted by a fund founded
by Cape Cod men to help deserving
boys through higher education. He was
admitted to the bar and was
successful from the start. Through-
out his life he had the greatest love
and devotion for his parents and
in cooperation with his brothers,
Francis and Dan, he arranged for
their comfort and welfare until their
death.
His death is a sad loss to his fam-
ily and the sympathy of the com-
munity goes out to his daughter,
Geraldine, the only surviving mem-
ber of her family.
