Swerving autos collide; driver of one is killed
A teen-ager was killed and three people were injured in a car accident about 6 p.m. Sunday near Thirtieth Street and Douglas Avenue.
Dennis Miller, 18 of 1227 Douglas Ave died at Iowa Methodist Medical Center from head and chest injuries, said Dr. H. C. Wooters, Polk County medical examiner.
Authorities said the MG convertible Miller was driving was hit broadside by a Chevrolet driven by Frederick Rodrigues. Accident investigators said Miller and Rodrigues were traveling in opposite directions.
Webber said Rodrigues swerved to avoid a car changing lanes and Miller swerved to miss Rodrigues. But the Rodrigues car crashed into the driver's side of Millers MG which spun into a driveway.
Three people in Rodrigues car were taken to Mercy Hospital Medical Center for minor injuries and released.
Wooten said "Miller was pale when I got there. There was't much any rescuers could have done" he said. Rodrigues was ticketed for failure to control his vehicle.
Another accident occurred on Douglas when Timothy Hiatt 23 looked at the first accident and ran into the back of a pickup truck. The driver of the pickup truck was treated for injures at a Des Moines hospital and released.
