BARNETT JEFFERSON (B. J. or "Barney") HOWARD, born on 12 October 1858 in Bankston, Choctaw County, Mississippi. He was the son of JOHN J. HOWARD (b: ca. 1807, Greenville Co, SC d: ca. 1879, Claiborne Parish, LA) and Nancy (Mary) Campbell (b: ca. 1817, SC d: ca. 1879, Claiborne Parish, LA). He was the 10th of 11 children.

In 1877, at the age of about 19, Barnett Jefferson Howard, married Parthenia Penelope Sillman. She was born on 16 September 1861 in Union Parish, Louisiana. The couple had twelve children, but six of them died prior to reaching adulthood. The 1900 Jackson Parish, Louisiana, census record showed that only six of their children were alive in 1900.

Barnett Jefferson Howard was a farmer and planter. He was very successful in this occupation and he acquired a number of acres of land.

Barnett (Barney) Jefferson Howard donated nine acres of land on which to build the Solomon Thought Baptist Church. Today the church is known as Beech Springs Baptist Church. It is located at 3119 Beech Springs Road (Louisiana Highway 542), Quitman, Jackson Parish, Louisiana, and the cemetery is near by at 3942 Beech Springs Road. There are a number of Howards buried at the Beech Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, including Barnett Jefferson's brother James Henry Howard, a World War I veteran (Pvt. La. Co. D. 53 Mg Bn, 18th Division), as well as his sisters, Ora Elizabeth Howard Pope, and Mary Ann Howard Duck. Barnett Jefferson Howard died on 6 February 1924 in Jackson Parish, Louisiana, and Parthenia Penelope Sillman Howard died on 5 November 1943 in Jackson Parish, Louisiana. They are buried next to the east fence on the back side of the Old Hebron Cemetery in Jonesboro, Jackson Parish, Louisiana. Barnett Jefferson Howard and his wife, Parthenia Penelope Sillman Howard could not be buried on the Ebenezer Baptist Church (Beech Springs Baptist Church) grounds because the pine trees had not been cleared out for the cemetery when Barnett Jefferson died in 1924.
