Gayland Graham McGill

Gayland Graham McGill LUBBOCK-A celebration of life service for Gayland Graham McGill, 71, of Lubbock will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, at Agape United Methodist Church in Lubbock. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Rix Funeral Directors. She passed away on Oct. 13, 2012. Gayland was born in Wellington on Aug. 7, 1941, to the late Lloyd and Pauline Graham. They moved to Ferris when she was 18 months old, and resided there until the family moved to Olton in 1953, where Mr. Graham was manager of Olton Co-op Gin. Gayland graduated from Olton High School in 1959, and married Tom B. "Mack" McGill in 1960. They farmed near the Sunnyside community. Gayland loved every minute of the farming life. They raised two children, Sherilyn Ruth and Thomas Jarrod, and were an integral part of the Olton community during their years together. Gayland was an active member of First Baptist Church, and later she and Mack were active in First Methodist Church in Olton. Exercising her entrepreneurial spirit, Gayland owned and operated Flower Shop Gifts in Olton, which was honored as Business of the Year in 1992. Gayland loved utilizing her talent in oil painting. She loved music, especially Gaither Gospel music; she played the piano and had a beautiful singing voice. She attained distinction by graduating as valedictorian from Dallas Institute of Funeral Service in 1992 at the age of 50. She moved to Lubbock in 2000 and worked as funeral director for Resthaven Funeral Home. She was an active member of Agape United Methodist Church, and also participated in activities at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. On Feb. 10, 2010, she become a funeral director at Rix Funeral Directors, and worked there until the time of her death. She is survived by a daughter, Sherilyn Pharr and husband Elton of Lubbock; son, Jarrod McGill and wife DeAnn of Olton; and two grandchildren, Thomas Aiden and Jenica Ann McGill of Olton. She also survived by many other family members and close friends. Family will receive friends at Rix Funeral Directors today, Oct. 17, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. Donations may be made to Heifer International at PO Box 8058, Little Rock, AR 72203, 888-548-6437.
