LAKIN — Russell Eugene Shankle, 77, of Lakin, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at the Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.
He was born March 6, 1935, in Turon, to John "Pete" and Mary (Wallace) Shankle.
On July 13, 1952, he married Dorothy Bell in Lakin.
Mr. Shankle worked on gas drilling rigs, at Gene Hornbaker's Cities Service Station on Main Street in Lakin, the construction of the Lakin Methodist Church and Farmers Co-op elevator, and Acid Engineers. He farmed and had livestock northwest of Lakin for 50 years. After retiring in 2004, they moved into town.
He was a member of the Kearny County Farm Bureau Board, the Kearny County Fair Board, was a 4-H community and project leader in woodworking, and served as a rural fireman. He was a dedicated member of Alcoholics Anonymous.
He attended the Lakin Wesleyan Church.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Kathy and husband Joe McVey of Lakin, Linda and husband Wiley Fisher of Olathe, and Annette Shankle of Wichita; a son, John and wife Tammy Shankle of Lakin; a brother-in-law, Harold "Pete" Walker of Elk City, Okla.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Margaret Walker; and a brother, Raymond Shankle.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Lakin Wesleyan Church, with Pastors Mark and Marcelle Hamel officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.
Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home in Lakin.
