Louisa Wilhelmenia Holden, was born at home on November 5, 1913 in Timberton, LA. She was an only child at home and, from the time she was born, she was known as "Bill" by all of her family and friends. Timberton, which no longer exists, was a small lumber town near Convent, LA. Her father, Charles Franklin Holden, worked at the lumber mill and they lived in a home next door to the school. My Grandmother, Ora May, said that when Mother was little, she kept “running away” to the school next door because she wanted to go to school so badly. When she was four years old, the school decided to let her stay so that is when she began the first grade. She loved school and never missed a day of school in her lifetime. Some of Mother's favorite memories were of riding the "Dummy Line" to Jefferson College in Convent, which is now "Manresa Retreat". A "Dummy Line" is a shortline railroad which was used for transporting lumber from the mill plus passengers going a short distance. Her father loved to go to the movies so they often went to the movie theater in Convent. The movie theater and the grocery store were located where Hymel's Restaurant is now located.
When Mother was in the 6th grade, the mill closed down, thus the demise of Timberton, LA. They moved to Plaquemine, LA, where her father was hired by Schwing’s Lumber Yard as the “Planning Mill Foreman”. They lived in a house at 1211 Meriam Street. She graduated from Plaquemine High School at the age of 15, having skipped the third grade when she was young. According to Mother, they owned one of the first automobiles in Plaquemine.

The house at 1211 Meriam Street was later purchased and was moved to the L.S.U. lakes area. It has been restored to its former grandeur and will be a reminder of times gone by.
