Birth: Aug. 26, 1831
Genesee County
New York, USA
Death: May 20, 1919
Niagara County
New York, USA

Mrs. Louise S. Gregory, aged 87 years, who died yesterday afternoon at the home of her brother, W.J. Jackman, Washburn and Genesee streets, after less than a week's illness with heart trouble, was the first female college graduate in the state of New York and also the oldest living graduate of Syracuse University at the time of her death. Mrs. Gregory graduated from that institution in the class of 1854 and after her graduation was a teacher at Lima University and also preceptress at Cooperstown University for several years, having also been offered the position of Dean for women at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, which she however declined. She was a proficitent instructor in Greek, Latin, and French.

Mrs. Gregory was born at Alexander, Genesee County, August 26th, 1831, and was the daughter of Judge James R and Gracia E. Jackman of that place. After completing her education at Syracuse University she taught at the other institutions named and later married Dr. Paul Gregory, who died some years ago at Nogales, Ariz. She also resided for a time at Marilla, Erie county, but for the past twenty years she has lived in Lockport with her brother, who is the sole surviving member of her immediate family. She had enjoyed remarkably good health throughout her long life but her advancing age and infirmities were not able to withstand the illness to which she succombed.

Her funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon, with services at the home of her niece, Mrs. Charles L. Dole, No. 279 West Avenue, at 3 o'clock. Rev. Henry F. Zwicker will officiate. The internment will be at Glenwood cemetery.
