HOSPITAL SITE SELECTED
Temporary Building Bought at Centennial and Forest

Kings Daughters Will Fit It Up and By Next Year the Permanent Buildings Should be Commenced There.

The Carthage city hospital is to be located on the high and quiet knoll at the northwest corner of Centennial Avenue and Forest street, southwest of Carthage. The site has been bought from Mrs. Sarah R. Wood, including one and one-quarter acres, a story and a half house, a cistern and well, for $1,250. It is hoped that in time 6 or 7 of the Thacker lots adjoining can be bought and added to the original property, making 2 1/2 or 3 acre site. The ground slopes east and north, and is in a healthful, restful, well shaded neighborhood. Dr. G. R. Hill now occupies the place.
The King's Daughters are to take charge of this property, and will fit it up for use by the physicians or private patients of the city under some sort of arrangement along the plan suggested by Dr. Ketcham.
Samuel McReynolds of the hospital association today expressed the hope that within six months a scheme for a loan of funds could be presented to the people, and that next year the erection of a permanent hospital can be commenced on this site. Eventually the Brooks bequest is to meet the loan now to be asked for.
As reported in The Carthage Evening Press
March 17, 1903

NOTE:
The first public hospital built, after temporary use of her old home, was a fourteen bed facility, on the home site of Sarah R Wood, sold 17, March 1930 for $1,250, opening 1907 at northwest corner of Centennial and Forest. Building pictured at right
Its believed funds donated to Dr McCune's memory by his mother, following his 1893 death, were used along with funds from Dr Brook's trust, established for "erection, equipping and maintaining" a much needed hospital prior to his 1899 death.
Name McCune-Brooks was an act by the city fathers in the late twenties when a fifty bed additional building was designed by Kansas City architects Hoener, Baun and Frosse opened in the fall of 1929 with $75,000 from John C Guinn's estate with community matching funds, ~ constructed immediately west of first hospital building which opened 1907.

Mrs. Sarah Wood Died Today
Apoplectic Stroke Hastened End After Long Sickness

After an illness of nearly a year, Mrs. Sarah R. Wood passed away at 12 o'clock today at her home on South Garrison. Ten months ago she had an apoplectic stroke and since that time has never been well. For the last two weeks she has been sick in bed and Tuesday she had another stroke that hastened her death.
The deceased has four children living: two by each of her two husbands. Miss Vesta Wood and Miss Marletta Pollard, both live at home. Another daughter is Mrs. G. F. Smith of Pine Street of this city, and the only living son is E. C. Pollard, of Seattle, Washington. He will be here Saturday to attend the funeral. Her youngest son Charles P. Wood died some years ago while at Chickamauga a volunteer in the war with Spain. A nephew, A. L. Grades, of Kansas City arrived this morning.
The funeral arrangements will not be made as yet, pending the arrival of the son from Washington.
The deceases was born 72 years ago at Richmond, VA., but she was reared in Kentucky. When a young woman she moved to Missouri with her parents, where she was married to H. Pollard at Lexington. She was left a widow and in 1871 was married to Mr. Wood at Sweet Springs, MO. Seventeen years ago she moved to Carthage and has since lived here. Mrs. Wood was a member of the Christian church. She had the respect of all who knew her, and will be greatly missed by a great many friends.
