HIT BY TRUCK, SCHNEIDER MAN DIES INSTANTLY---Body Crushed in Front of His Home in Route U.S. 41--Hold Driver--- Gilman Phelps, 32-year-old filling station attendant was instantly killed today when he stepped into the path of a truck in U.S. 41 directly in front of his home at 4:45 a.m. today. The truck driver, Elmer J. McDowell, 31, of 430 Massachusetts street, Indianapolis, is held in the Lake county jail at Crown Point pending the coroner's inquest, which will be conducted tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock. McDowell told State Patrolman Ralph Combs that Phelps started across the street in front of his truck and then stopped as though to turn back. He was employed across the street from his home. Phelps died of a crushed chest, left leg, and internal injuries. The body was taken to the Weaver funeral home, Lowell. He is survived by a wife and two children. Funeral arrangements were not completed this afternoon. McDowell drove a Canada Dry Bottling company truck, owned by Otto Abshir of Indianapolis, his destination at the time of the accident.
