Alfonso was born to Francesco and Caterina (nee Gioccimo) Torregrossa in the tenement where his parents and siblings lived at 83 James Street in New York City.

As a young man he played piano in a jazz ensemble in his spare time. He married Bessie Flashenberg in 1926. Al had his own leather importing business in the late 1950s-early 1960s named Al Terry & Sons. Prior to this he worked as an executive for the importer and manufacturer of high quality leather accessories and shoes, Fleming Jaffe

Al suffered a heart attack while attending a performance of "Hello Dolly" on the evening of Saturday, August 14, 1964. He was taken to New York Hospital where he passed on at 1:35 a.m. on Sunday, August 15, 1964.

The funeral was held at Andrew Torregrossa and Sons Funeral Home at 1305 79th Street with burial at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale, Long Island on August 18, 1964.

Al was missed greatly by his family and friends. He was rememberd for the hospitality he extended to family and friends, as well as for his generosity to his grandchildren.
