John B. Bowman Obit

John B. Bowman was born in Owsley Co., Ky. on 5 Dec., 1879, the son of Robert Sturgus Bowman & Dicie Jane Peters Bowman. He would marry Mary Ellen Bowman, daughter of Henry & Elizabeth McVey Bowman on 10 Dec., 1903 & the couple would make their home at Endee & To this union there were born seven daughters, Lizzie Jane (Floyd) Reynolds, Beatrice (Lee) Callahan, Cliffie (Floyd) Becknell, Bessie,
(Ivan) Spence, Lillian (Estill) Peters, Emma (Robert) Brewer & Ernestine (Lee) Peters. He was a charter member of the Susan Chapter, OES &, along with his wife, was a frequent office of the lodge.
He was also a member of the New Hope Lodge of the F & AM & a Deacon of the New Hope Baptist Church.
His life would be spent in tending his farm & supplementing the family income by operating a sorghum mill. There were a large number of "John" Bowmans within the county &, to differentiate between them, many were often given a nickname. As a young man, he received the nickname of "Millie" which some have said was in reference to his operation of a sorghum mill.
His life was spent tending the land & reaping the harvest of his labors & he is the subject of a fictional story in a book written by his grandson.
"Among all men, he considered himself to be most blessed. He owned half of Bowman hollow on both sides, including the head of the hollow. He had good pasture land, farm land, apple orchards & an abundance of trees. He even owned a gas well that supplied his home with natural gas for lighting &
for heating in the winter. But among the most precious of his blessings was the gift of seven daughters, the biblical number for completeness & they had truly made his life complete. "
He was a very serious man, not prone to joviality & was never shy in declaring his dissatisfaction with those around him whom he considered to be speaking or behaving in a flippant manner. He no doubt saw life as a very serious matter that required ones attitude to also be just as serious.
John B. Bowman died three days after Christmas on 28 Dec., 1938 at the age of fifty-nine. He was buried in the family cemetery near his father, mother & other members of his family.
