Mr. Caldwell was a native of Craig, born Jan. 24, 1856 to William Harvey Caldwell and Mariah Francis Craft Caldwell.
With the exception of a few years spent in the mid-west when a young man and a later residence in Bedford County, most of his life was spent in Craig.
He was Mayor of New Castle for several terms, was prominent in Masonic circles, and an all around good citizen and neighbor who counted his friends by the score.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at the home on Main Street, conducted by Rev. F. F. Neel of the Southern Methodist Church.
Interment was made in the Caldwell burying ground three miles east of New Castle.
His wife, Anne Amelia Zimmerman, preceded him in death a few years earlier. He is survived by a daughter, Anne Louise Caldwell, one brother, E. W. Caldwell, of lower Craigs Creek, and one sister, Mrs. Sallie Calldwell, of Roanoke.
