Golfer who won the Professional Golf Association championship in 1950. Was a major presence in the Virginia golf scene for over 70 years. Became the youngest player to win the Virginia State Golf Association’s Amateur championship at age 16, a distinction he still holds. Also won 10 other PGA Tour events and played on the 1955 Ryder Cup team. Became the oldest man at age 56 to win the VSGA’s State Open, another record that still endures. In all, he won the Virginia State Open 10 times between 1932 and 1970. He co-founded and ran Bide-A-Wee golf course in Portsmouth, Virginia, from 1955 to 1992. After ending his PGA Tour career, Harper enjoyed great success as a senior golfer, winning the U.S. National Senior Open and the 1968 PGA Seniors Championship. Elected to the PGA of America Hall of Fame in 1968 and installed in the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1973. (bio by: Fred Beisser)
