Flight Lieutenant Johnston was a veteran of the Second World War.

F/L Johnston was one of five RCAF airmen and two RCAF dependents who perished in the crash of Bristol 170 Freighter 31M (#9697) aircraft as it approached the Marville aerodrome at 1(F) Wing, Marville, France, on 30 Dec 1963. His brother, Group Captain E. R. ('Russ') Johnston, also based in 2 Wing at that time, was the Commanding Officer of 2 (F) Wing.
The five Royal Canadian Air Force servicemen killed in this aircraft accident were-
Sergeant Peter Antoon George BACH,
Flight Lieutenant Verner Isadore CLOUTIER,
Flight Lieutenant John Kenneth HAMLEN,
Flight Lieutenant Britton Lyle JOHNSTON and
Flight Lieutenant Edward John WALSHE.
The two civilian dependents killed in this aircraft accident were-
Hazel Mary BACH and her son,
6yo Donald George BACH.

He is also remembered with love and honour on a family grave monument in the Malvern Cemetery in Lennoxville, Quebec, Canada.
