Born in Port Washington, Wisconsin in 1890 to parents Henry and Catherine Lorge Bley. Enlisted in the Army in 1917 stationed at Camp Sherman (Chillicotte, Ohio) and later in Butcher School at Camp Joseph E. Johnson (Jacksonville, Florida). As a corporal, assigned to Graves Registration Service at Belleau Wood Cemetery, Chateau Thierry (Aisne) France in 1919.
After losing his first wife (Susan Young) in childbirth in 1918, married again in 1921 (Etta Lemarbe) and lived in Chicago and owned a small grocery and meat market in Whiting, Indiana. There he became the father of three children: John, Betty, and Jane. He later divorced and moved to Pasadena, California. He worked as a butcher and later married his third wife (Margaret Plankey). They owned an antique business for a while, and in the late 1950s moved to Beloit, Wisconsin, where he died in 1968.
