William McEntyre Dye

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1853, served on the frontier with the 8th United States Infantry, and was promoted 1st Lieutenant in 1856 and Captain on May 14, 1861. He was commissioned Colonel and commander of the 20th Iowa Volunteer Infantry on August 25, 1862, and served in Missouri and Arkansas until 1863. In 1864, he led a brigade in the Red River Campaign in Louisiana, and commanded a brigade at Mobile Bay, Alabama, taking part in several expeditions. In 1865 he served as Acting Assistant Provost Marshal of Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, and Dakota, and was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war. He was also brevetted Colonel in the Regular Army on April 9, 1865 for gallantry in the Mobile campaign. After the war he served with the 4th United States Infantry in various garrisons, and on September 30, 1870, was honorably discharged at his own request with the rank of Major. He entered the Egyptian Army late in 1873 and served as assistant to the Chief of Staff in the Abyssinian expedition, where he was wounded. He returned to the United States in 1879, served as Chief of Police of the District of Columbia from 1883 to 1886 and was Chief of the Special Examination Division of the Pension Office in Washington in 1887. He also wrote a book detailing his experiences in Egypt titled, "Moslem Egypt and Christian Abyssinia, Military Service under the Khedive". (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
