Rheta Mae Guthery, 92, winged her way to Heaven on August, 30, 2012 in Pathways Hospice Care Center, Loveland, Colorado. Rheta was surrounded by the love of her family.
Rheta was born April 10, 1920 to Mary and Corbett Cundiff in Brownville, Nebraska. During her childhood, she enjoyed living on farms in Brownville, Nebraska, Bolckow, Missouri, and Harris Dairy in St. Joseph.
Rheta loved learning throughout her life. She attended Woodbine, Bliss, and Lafayette High schools. Rheta met her husband of 65 years, Ray Guthery, at a food fair. Rheta and Ray worked and raised their three children, Ron, Jayne, and Jo in St. Joseph, Missouri, Carthage, Missouri, and Atchison, Kansas. They retired to St. Joseph, Missouri in 1977.
Rheta was very active in her community, especially her church. She started teaching Sunday School at 15 and continued at Patee Park Baptist Church until she was 88. Rheta served her churches as Sunday School Superintendent, director of Bible School as well as singing in the choir. For many years, Rheta was the receptionist at the Patee Park Church food pantry. Her ready smile and genuine kindness helped all feel welcomed. Rheta truly lived her Christian beliefs.
Rheta, an outstanding cook and baker, generously gave home-cooked meals and pies to church, friends and neighbors. She baked hundreds of decorated sugar cookies for her children's schools. Rheta's fudge and divinity were big hits at school carnivals and Halloween.
Rheta is survived by her three children and their spouses: Ron Guthery, Jayne Hennen, and Jo Broockerd; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Corbett Cundiff (Virginia), and sister-in-law Mayme White, of St. Joseph. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sisters, Gertrude, Vivian, and Ava.
A celebration of Rheta Guthery's life will be held on Saturday, September 15, 10:00 A.M. at Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, September 14, 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory.
