Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 4, 2000, near her son's home in West Columbia, Texas, following a lengthy illness. Her adventurous life spanned the remarkable events of the 20th century. She grew up in east Texas and attended Baylor College in Belton, Texas, and Sul Ross College in Alpine, Texas. She began her teaching career in a one-room school on the Texas-Mexico border, in the village of Ruidosa, Presidio County, in the Big Bend area, with her sister, Margaret Atkins. There shemet and married Herbert Alford, a specialist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, who predeceased her in 1992. His career with the USDA took the family to San Angelo, Texas, where she continued her dedication to education and community service. She was past president of the Women's Federation Study Club, which founded the Tom Green Public Library. She taught Sunday school at First United Methodist Church, San Angelo. Later she taught sixth grade at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic School in Baton Rouge from 1959 until retiring in 1970. Survivors include her sister, Margaret Atkins Young, Waco, Texas; three sons, John Herbert Alford, Dallas, Thomas Richard "Dick" Alford, West Columbia, and Robert Atkins Alford, Sparta, N.J.; a daughter, Jane Ann Tudor Welch, Santa Fe, N.M.; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Friends may call at Baker Funeral Home, West Columbia, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. Visiting at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until memorial services at 11 a.m. Saturday. Graveside services at Greenoaks Memorial Park, 9425 Florida Blvd., at 11 a.m. Monday. Memorial gifts may be made to the children's wing at Tom Green County Library, 113 W. Beauregard St., San Angelo, TX 76903. Specific book purchases will be identified in her honor. Arrangements are under the direction of Baker Funeral Home, 634 S. Columbia Drive, West Columbia.
