Capt. Simeon C. Peyton died at his city residence here on Main street Sunday evening of heart failure, aged 76 years. He had been sick for less than a week. The deceased was one of the wealthiest and most prominent citizens of Stafford county, where he was born and spent his life engaged mostly in farming pursuits. He commenced a poor boy, but he had all the elements to make a successful business man. In early life he was employed on a farm, and when he had gathered together his savings, a small sum, he started business for himself, and by strict economy and untiring energy accumulated a large estate. In later years he came to this city with his wife, built a city residence in which he spent the winters, and conducted a wood and coal yard. Several years ago his wife died.
He was always prominent in Stafford politics, being a Democrat, and retained his citizenship in that county. He was for years a member of the Board of Supervisors and was once the nominee of his party for the Legislature for the counties of Stafford and King George, but was defeated by the late Duff Green.
He was a member of the Fredericksburg Baptist church, and for many years, a member of the men's Bible class. Three sons survive him, Messrs. Edward L. Peyton, of Fauquier; William T. Peyton, of Stafford; and Whitfield D. Peyton, of Richmond. Also one brother, James H. Peyton, of King George. Funeral services will be held from the Baptist church Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock. Rev. Dr. T. S. Dunaway, assisted by Rev. R. A. Williams, will conduct the services. The interment will be at New Hope church in Stafford. Pallbearers: Messrs. E. D. Cole, J. R. Rawlings, J. Elton Alrich, W. F. Bell, J. A. Harris, Judge A. T. Embrey, Ashton Dodd, S. E. Eastburn.
