Robert was the son of Robert Henry Barron and Ethel Mae Patton Barron. He attended Spearsville High School in Spearsville, Union Parish, Louisiana. His first wife was Carolyn Evonne Rockett, and they had a son and two daughters. Robert and Carolyn were divorced. His second wife was Mable.

Robert was a soldier in World War II. In 1943, he entered the United States Army and trained at Camp Abbott, Oregon. Robert served in the European Theater of Operations. He was awarded the ETO Medal, GC Medal and Victory Medal. In 1945, T/5 Robert Harold Barron was discharged from the United States Army.
