Orlando Police said the two women were struck down as they were crossing Delaney Avenue at Lucerne Circle. A city patrolman stated that there were no skid marks at the scene and no indication that the car tried to stop either before or after striking Mrs. Backus and Mrs. French.
The Orlando newspaper reported that city police said a positive identification had been established on the make of the car which hit the two women.
Mrs. Backus was born on January 16, 1880 at Fly Creek, the daughter of Eli and Abigail (Bourne) Burpee. On December 9, 1908, she was married to Stanley S. Backus at Oneonta. Mr. Backus died about ten years ago in Florida.
She was a resident of the Village of Hartwick for many years, where Mr. Backus operated a hardware store. In later years, she has lived in Oneonta and during the winter resided in Orlando. She was an attendant of the First Methodist Church, Oneonta, a 50-year member of Hartwick Chapter 617, OES, and was a past matron of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. French, and Mrs. Louise Cronk of Atlanta, Ga; three nephews, Donald Cronk of Delmar, Philip M. Crippen of Norwich, and Edward B. Crippen of Oneonta, and three nieces, Mrs. Christine Waldo of Hollywood, Fla., Mrs. Janette Springer and Mrs. Dorothy Hill, both of Atlanta, Ga.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. on Friday, February 2, from the Patterson Funeral Home in Hartwick, with Dr. H. Claude Hardy of Hartwick College officiating.
