Mrs. Sarah Peter is one of the most important persons in the history of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. She was the eldest daughter of Thomas Worthington, the sixth govenor of Ohio, and one-time United States Senator. Mrs. Peter converted to Catholicism after the death of her second husband. Her good works benefited both civic, cultural and religious institutions in Cincinnati. She is most remembered for bring five different religious orders of Sisters to the Cincinnati area -- the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, the Sisters of Mercy, the Sisters of the Poor of St. Francis, the Little Sisters of the Poor and the Sacred Heart nuns. She is also responsible for the presence of the Passionist priests in Cincinnati. Mrs. Peters has been called the mother of the Church in Cincinnati. In addition to her religious contributions, she also began the Cincinnati Art Academy and was a patroness of the Cincinnati Art Museum. There is still some consideration for her candidacy for sainthood. ----------------- It is reported that Sarah's second husband, William Peter, is buried at the Saint Peter's Churchyard in Philadelphia, Pa., but have not been able to confirm it.
