Deceased Name: JEAN HAMILTON FIKE , 68 WAS CHURCH VOLUNTEER
Jean M. Hamilton Fike , an active volunteer at St. Francis of Xavier Church in Marcellus, died of cancer Thursday at Community-General Hospital. She was 68 and lived at 4319 Gypsy Road, Marcellus.

"Her illness was very quick, very sad," her daughter Mary McSweeney said today. Mrs. Fike was diagnosed with the disease March 18.

Mrs. Fike 's life centered around family and church. Her son and two daughters lived nearby. Her dozen grandchildren, age 2 to 20, who called her Nana, were in and out of her house frequently. They enjoyed swinging on a rope tied to a tree in the yard and playing checkers indoors on rainy days.

"She was a real family person, so, so sweet. She was the sweetest thing, like an angel. People would say to me, 'Your mother is the greatest.' She had the sweetest smile," her daughter said.

Mrs. Fike was a devout Catholic. She prayed the rosary each evening along with a radio broadcast from Auburn. After retiring from Marine Midland Bank in downtown Syracuse in 1983, she spent time helping with office tasks at her church, where she entered information on a computer, recorded finances and greeted visitors.

Mrs. Fike was born in Brooklyn and reared in the Ridgewood neighborhood of Queens. She graduated from Grover Cleveland High School in Ridgewood and worked in Manhattan as a secretary before her marriage to Marshall C. Fike of Marcellus in 1948.

Mrs. Fike lived in Marcellus since her marriage. She worked for the bank from 1973 to 1983. During those years, she attended mass daily at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception before going to her office.

Mrs. Fike took two aerobic classes a week: Mondays at the Marcellus Library and Wednesdays at Pine Grove Health & Country Club in Camillus. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society at St. Francis of Xavier and was an elections inspector for several years in Marcellus.
