A, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry but detailed as a clerk in the quartermaster department September 1, 1862. He was sent to Carver U.S. Hospital in Washington DC November-December 1862 time frame, transferred to the hospital in York March-April period, and rejoined the regiment May 15, 1863, to be honorably discharged with his company May 21, 1863. Brothers George, Theodore U., and James Albert also served with the 130th Pennsylvania.
He married Margaret Ann Waggoner April 12, 1866, in Carlisle and fathered John Underwood (b. 05/05/57), and Theodore B. (b. 09/19/69), Milton H. (b. 05/07/72), Margaret A. (b. 12/24/78), and Edward Arthur (b. 03/11/82).
