Born at family Plantation, "Cedar Farm" Culpeper County, Virginia and died at family Plantation, "Soldier's Rest", Orange County, Virginia. Son of William Williams and Lucy Clayton. Brothers: John; William Clayton and Philip Williams. Sisters: Mary; Lucy; Elizabeth and Susannah Williams.

Married 1st: Eleanor Green and had three children: William, James and Sarah.

Married 2nd, June 3, 1795, St. Thomas, Orange County, Virginia, Elizabeth Bruce and fathered: Francis Bruce, Charles Bruce, William Bruce, Lucy Ann, Philip and Elizabeth.

2nd Lt., 10th Virginia Regt.,December 1776; 1st Lt., March 18, 1777; Capt. Jan. 2, 1778, Regt. 6th Virginia; Capt. Sept. 19, 1778 and served to the close of the Revolutionary War. Was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati. Served as a Major General of Militia in the War of 1812.
