Samuel graduated from Harvard College in 1836, and then went on to Harvard Medical School, graduating in1839. He then continued his medical studies in Paris for another year. By July of 1841, he had returned to Boston and was working at the Broad St. Dispensary, which provided medical services to the poor thanks to private gifts and donations from wealthy Bostonians. The following year, 1842, he was the physician to an academic group exploring the Yucatan.

Finally, in 1844, Samuel established his own formal medical and surgical practice in Boston that lasted for the next forty years. He was one of the Massachusetts General Hospital's surgeons. He was an active abolitionist before the Civil War.

Written by Nanny, from information found in the History and Genealogy of the Cabot Family, by L. Vernon Briggs, 1927.

From FAG contributor Perry Young;

DR. SAMUEL CABOT, a well-know physician of this city, died at his residence, Park square, yesterday in his seventieth year. Mr. Cabot was the son of Mr. Samuel Cabot, a former merchant of this city and a grandson of the late Col. Thomas H. Perkins. Mr. Cabot's mother died recently at the advanced age of ninety-four. He was graduated at Harvard College in 1836, at the medical school in 1839 and subsequently studied medicine in Paris. He was a surgeon at the Massachusetts General Hospital and was a much esteemed member of the medical fraternity. In his younger days, he accompanied the traveler Stephens in his explorations in Central America.
