Betty grew up on the family farm in Iola and graduated from Iola High School in 1953. She was active in 4-H in Iola and helped on the farm. She also assisted with many tasks at her father's business, Fritz Auto Supply. She married the love of her life, Lawrence Murray of Piqua, on September 6, 1954 at St. John's Catholic Church in Iola. They relocated to Kansas City where they continued to add to their family and became devoted parents to their six children. Betty was also kind and loving to her children's friends and neighborhood children and she and her husband were known by many of them as Momma Betty and Big Murray. She was a great friend and neighbor to many and never turned anyone away. She cooked many meals over the years for the local food kitchen and helped with dinners at her church. After raising her family, she served as a waitress at several local establishments. Among her favorite hobbies were sewing and crocheting and taking care of her cats.
Betty was a faithful and active parishioner at St. Peter's Cathedral Catholic Church where she was a member of the Altar Society, and the church choir. Her children fondly remember the times she spent with their dad singing in the choir. She also helped in many other capacities at the church and school over the years. Faith in God was an important part of her life and she helped see to it despite many sacrifices, that all her children were blessed to receive the gift of Catholic education at St. Peter's Grade School and Bishop Ward High School.
